Science Department
At Yavneh College, we believe that excellent facilities, high levels of pupil motivation and outstanding teaching can enable our pupils to achieve a high level of success in their science education.
Curriculum
Pupils are divided into three main Key Stages at Yavneh College. Key Stage 3 education is taught in Years 7, 8 and 9. Key Stage 4 covers the GCSE courses of Years 10 and 11. Key Stage 5 involves the teaching of AS and A2 Levels in the 6th form of the school.
The main information of each of these Key Stages, including subject content, teaching hours and assessment is contained in the word documents that can be downloaded by following the links below.![]()

Facilities
We have 7 brand new, purpose built science laboratories in the department. These labs have been designed to the highest specification and contain new equipment that allows for the teachers to present pupils with a motivational and inspirational viewpoint of science. This is alongside a large and well-stocked prep room that is staffed by well trained and experienced technicians.
Enrichment
The Science Department offers a number of activities as part of the school’s enrichment program. In the last few years these have included:
- Microbiology – including entry to the National Microbiological (MiSAC) Society
- Salter’s Chemistry Club – wet bench chemistry
- Astronomy Club
- A Blend of Biology
- Sci Fi Club
National Science and Engineering Week is also focussed on in the school. There is the opportunity to enter into national competitions; last year was the Darwin Award, alongside several school-based events. Other events put on to celebrate this annual event have included:
- A whole school talk by visiting professor Dr Max Coleman, Director of the Centre for Life at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
- A science museum – entries last year were based on ‘Advancements in Science’ was made by the pupils to be put on display in the LRC. This competition has received a high standard of entries each year. Pupils often use this as an opportunity to exhibit cross-curricular skills, for example using electronic wiring and plastic moulding skills learnt in technology to create moving and interactive displays.
- A quiz competition between each tutor group in order to crown a year group champion form.
