Business and Enterprise Status

Yavneh College was awarded specialist school status as a Business & Enterprise College in September 2008.

What is specialist school status?

Schools which are awarded specialist school status by the government are expected to use their status to raise standards of achievement and the quality of learning for all their pupils in particular subjects. Additional funding is provided each year to support this work.

As a Business & Enterprise College, the additional funding that we receive is used for promoting teaching and learning in

  1. Business & Enterprise
  2. Mathematics
  3. ICT

and to encourage economic and business understanding, enterprise activities and opportunities for our pupils, for the pupils of local schools and for adults in the local community.

How does Business & Enterprise status affect what happens within Yavneh College?

Enterprise skills are embedded across the curriculum.

Throughout Key Stage 3 (Years 7 – 9) all pupils have one lesson of Business & Enterprise per fortnight, covering topics such as stock market simulation, marketing, communication skills, stereotyping, team building, cv writing, interview skills and time management. The weekly Enterprise Club run for KS3 pupils by the Business & Enterprise Department is a very popular Enrichment Programme activity.

At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11), all pupils study GCSE Business Communication, except for those taking triple science, and many study GCSE Business Studies and GCSE ICT.

Pupils throughout the school enjoy participating in the programme of activities provided by our Business & Enterprise Department during the annual World Enterprise Week. The Department also organises Business & Enterprise Days for every year group during the school year, covering such activities as designing and marketing products, work shadowing, a World Trade Day and a Dragon's Den competition.

How do we use Business & Enterprise status to contribute to the community?

The funding we receive as a Business & Enterprise College enables us to support associated projects within the wider community.

We work with Worknet to assist adults to develop their basic employability skills, we help Rotary to produce promotional materials for the annual Borehamwood Schools Art Festival in the Village Hall and the pupils in our charity group Yad Yavneh prepare food parcels for the needy every week.

We work with Hertswood School, providing ICT consultancy support, planning joint sixth form workshops for Business & Enterprise and joint training for our maths departments.

We work with six primary schools, running maths masterclasses for their gifted & talented pupils, financial awareness workshops for Yr 6 classes and Enterprise Days for Yr 5 pupils.
